Tips for Starting an Exercise Program that Helps You Stay in Excellent Shape

Almost every person you talk to understands the importance of staying in excellent physical shape. Sadly, life has become a never-ending race that leaves many with little time to exercise. Even people who are ready to spare time to train or go to the gym do not know where to start. Because of these difficulties, there is a need for coming up with effective strategies on how to start exercising either for the first time or as a returnee.

So, how should you start the exercise program?

Set realistic goals

Set simple, realistic, and achievable goals. It is good to dream big. However, big dreams can discourage you if you are a beginner. For example, a person starting out would stand a better chance of enjoying success by setting 20 minutes aside to train every day. Alternatively, make it 20 minutes for 4-5 days. Thereafter, increase the minutes as the body adapts to the new training regime.

Develop a habit of tracking any little progress you make. Write the progress down.

Reward yourself

Next, set up a reward system. Reward yourself for any small progress you make. However, choose any other type of reward apart from food. Here, you have more than one option. For example, you can go for a massage, watch a movie, or buy something nice. Track your progress for a week or a month. Reward yourself only if you stick to your goals for a specific duration of time.

Train with friends

Everybody needs a healthy support system to accomplish anything worth talking about in this life. You also need people who support you as you embark on this journey. Look for a friend with whom you can be accountable. Get one from your workplace or class. Alternatively, form a group of your close friends to start reporting to the gym for a few sessions each week. It is easier to start when you have adequate support.

Moreover, you are more likely to have fun while exercising with friends among other benefits.

Start small

Do not start too aggressively. Start small. Make baby steps before increasing the pace and frequency later. This ties in closely with the point regarding making your goals simple, realistic and achievable. For example, start by walking. It is just as highly effective as any other form of exercise you wish to start. Walking is healthy for your body. Walk with a pedometer to help you keep track of your progress as you attempt to reach your goals.

Therefore, be ready to start exercising today.

Do not procrastinate but stand up and just do it, as Nike says.
